Personal training for Ponsonby.

The studio is at 19 Auburn Street in Grafton — ten to twelve minutes from Ponsonby and Grey Lynn, across Karangahape Road. There’s off-street parking, which on this side of town is worth saying out loud.

You don’t have to train at six or six.

Almost everyone I coach from Ponsonby works for themselves, and that changes what good training looks like. If your calendar is genuinely yours, the worst possible time to train is the hour every commuter is also trying to train.

A mid-morning or early-afternoon session on a floor with one or two other people on it is a different experience from the same session at 6pm. Nothing is queued, nothing is rushed, and I have more attention to give you. The people who train off-peak here get noticeably more coaching per hour, and it costs the same.

The flip side of self-employment is that the week falls over sometimes — a shoot runs long, a deal lands, a client moves everything. The programme is built to be moved rather than abandoned. Missing a Tuesday isn’t a setback; it’s a Wednesday.

Who comes across from Ponsonby.

The Ponsonby and Grey Lynn roster skews self-employed and creative — people with flexible days, unpredictable weeks, and no interest in a training plan that assumes a nine-to-five.

  • A photographer whose week is dictated by shoots, training on a programme designed to move around them rather than compete with them.
  • A brand designer who came in for general strength and ended up using it to get through a 24-hour backyard ultramarathon.
  • A mortgage broker training two to three times a week around client appointments, mostly outside peak hours because the day allows it.
“Sam is amazing. He helped me do a 24hr backyard ultramarathon with targeted training and strength work. Uber knowledgeable. Super friendly. He’ll get you results!”

What it costs.

Semi-private membership is $299 a month. Most people start on semi-private plus a weekly 1:1 — a three-month foundations term at $499 a month, then $599 month to month. Every option starts with a conversation and an evaluation, and the first session is free.

Also within an easy drive: Parnell and Remuera. Grey Lynn, Herne Bay and Westmere are the same trip or a couple of minutes more.

Ponsonby questions.

How long does it take from Ponsonby or Grey Lynn?

Ten to twelve minutes for most of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn — Ponsonby Road onto Karangahape Road, then down into Grafton. There’s off-street parking at the studio, so the drive is the whole trip rather than the first half of it.

Do you cover Grey Lynn, Herne Bay and Westmere?

Yes. The studio is in Grafton and people travel to it, so the practical question is only ever the drive. Grey Lynn is essentially the same trip as Ponsonby; Herne Bay and Westmere add a few minutes. Anyone west of the city centre is well within range.

Can I train during the day?

Yes, and if your schedule allows it I’d encourage it. Off-peak sessions are quieter, which means more coaching attention for the same money. The live timetable shows what’s genuinely open this week — hours are still growing, so if the slot you want isn’t there, tell me when you enquire.

Is there parking?

Off-street parking on site. Grafton is hospital and university territory so it’s a fair thing to ask, but it isn’t something you’ll have to deal with here. I’ll send entry and parking details before your first session.

Tell me what you’re after and how your week actually looks. The first session is free, and there’s nothing attached to it.
